Area Agency on Aging (AAA)
In Oregon, there are 14 Districts for Area Agencies
on Aging serving their respective communities. Each state can configure
how they want their AAA to function. Some have the AAA duties performed
or housed with a state program or an agency dealing with health
and social services while other states develop a commission to oversee
grants and programs. The main functions of an AAA are identification
and assessment of local needs, coordinate planning and provision
of services for older individuals. Monies to support these agencies
come from federal monies through the Older Americans Act and often
matching state monies. With each AAA, there are standing requirements
such as having an advisory council, developing an area plan for
two-three or four year periods, participating with and taking direction
from the State Unit on Aging (located in Salem in Oregon) and provide
assistance to local, state and federal governments on the needs
of older individuals with special attention to rural, minority,
low-income and at risk for institutional placement. AAA assists
in coordinating or contracting services and where appropriate providing
services such as care coordination.
