Service Definition
Medication Management
These services provide information, counseling
or education on issues related to prescription drugs and over the
counter medications. Services include such activities as: public
education related to medication management problems; assisting seniors
in applying for low cost or no cost prescription programs through
pharmaceutical and community resources; training programs on medication
management skills for consumers and caregivers; screening programs
with public health and health practitioners to identify persons
at high risk of medication interactions and adverse reactions and
provision of client specific medication review and consultations
by pharmacists, nurse practitioners or physicians.
How Service is provided
Medication Management:
The Area Agency on Aging coordinates volunteers in four of the five
counties we serve (Hood River, Wasco, Sherman, and Wheeler Counties).
Funding is provided via contracts from the State. Gilliam County
receives its own funding to provide this service. AAA staff coordinate
volunteer activities including:
- Coordinate training sessions for new volunteers
and on-going training to assure volunteers stay current with program
knowledge.
- Secure sites in each county that include internet
access where volunteers can meet and assist clients one on one.
- Assure volunteers complete monthly reports
in a timely manner.

- Select Medicare prescription drug plan.
- Find out if you are receiving all possible
benefits.
- Compare supplemental health insurance policies.
- Evaluate your need for long-term care insurance.
- File an appeal or insurance complaint.
Service Definition
SHIBA
The Senior Health Insurance Benefits Assistance (SHIBA) program
provides free counseling to people with Medicare and those who assist
them. Volunteers who are trained in Medicare can help you select
a Medicare prescription drug plan; find out if you are receiving
all possible benefits; compare supplemental health insurance policies;
review a bill; and file an appeal or complaint.
This program is part of the Oregon Department
of Consumer and Business Services and is funded by a federal grant,
then contracted with local areas throughout the State.
